My interest in learning ecologies has developed from our commitment to supporting lifewide learning. Over the last three years we have published several issues of Lifewide Magazine, produced two book chapters, several posts and made numerous contributions to university conferences and other professional development activities. There comes a point where these bits and bobs have to be brought together so six weeks ago I began to bring these ideas together in a book.The key affordance of the Social Age is connectivity and our ability to connect to other scholars via social media. Having just read George Veletsianos' blog on Networked Scholars I wanted to try something which I haven't done before, which is to publish chapters as they were written in draft on my website and invite people through social media to provide feedback and suggestions for further development. Its been disappointing so far. I can see that people have downloaded the chapters but no-one has commented or given me feedback by email. I am left wondering - are people just not interested in my ideas? or are they so far fetched that people are too embarrassed to comment? or are they just not worthy of comment or perhaps they are inaccessible? Whatever the reason I need to know and unless people give me feedback I will never know. I have also posted invitations on academia.edu and various linked-in groups. Whatever the reason I am beginning to question the value of social media in open networked scholarship.
But it is not in my nature to give up so I try again. The Editorial Team is planning the next issue of Lifewide Magazine which we will devote to exploring the sorts of learning ecologies we create to enable us to develop professionally.
I invite you to share a story about how you have developed yourself in your own work or work-related context or developed yourself for a new role. Your story should be between 500-1000 words and include a reflective analysis using this simple tool. In this way we hope to apply and continue to develop the idea of learning ecologies.
