FBSE RESEARCH & ENTERPRISE CONFERENCE 17th JUNE 2013
LIFEWIDE LEARNING : THE IDEA OF A SHOEBOX ECOLOGY
Prof Norman Jackson, Christine Fountain and Susan Patrick
Workshop Abstract
'Personalisation, collaboration and informal learning will be at the core of learning in the future. The central learning paradigm is characterised by lifelong and lifewide learning and shaped by the ubiquity of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT)'1 So says a European Commission Foresight Report envisioning learning in 2030 yet our educational system currently pays little attention to the lifewide dimension of students' learning and development. If universities are going to prepare learners for their future of learning there is therefore both a need and an opportunity to develop new pedagogic approaches that will encourage, support, recognise and value learners' self-determined and self-managed development through their lifewide experiences. One approach is to introduce a FBSE Lifewide Development Award. This workshop will explore the concept of lifewide learning and engage delegates in a creative activity to reflect on non-traditional learning experiences.
Workshop outline
Activity 1 Preparation 20mins
The concept of lifewide learning will be presented together with an illustration of how students' lifewide learning and personal development might be encouraged, supported, recognised and valued, based on Lifewide Education's, Lifewide Development Award. The idea of a shoebox ecology introduced
Activity 2 Shoe box activity 20 mins
Delegates will be divided into groups. Each group will be invited to identify a common or shared activity that members of the group can all relate to, such as caring for a relative, taking part in a sporting activity, organising a social event, arranging a holiday, managing a household budget. Each member of the group will then be invited to reflect on the learning gained from the identified activity, and to select an object or image that they would associate with it, to be placed in the group learning shoe box.
Activity 3 Group presentations and discussions
Groups will be invited to present their shoe boxes and to explain the learning points and connections.
